On 10 December, Human Rights Day, we celebrate the tremendous progress made toward securing LGBTQ+ equality across the globe, but we also remember that much work still remains to combat the widespread persecution and oppression that challenge our community. First observed in 1950 on the two-year anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Human Rights Day is annually observed by all UN member states — including many that ironically still criminalize consensual same-sex activity or the gender expression and/or identity of transgender people.

While Taiwan is not as popular of a tourist destination as its Asian neighbors, it is considered one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly destinations in Asia. Taiwan was put on the map for many LGBTQ+ travelers on International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia 2019, when it became Asia’s first country to legalize same-sex marriage. It has never had laws against homosexuality, and is one of the few places in Asia that has anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender characteristics. In addition, Taiwan is the world’s first country to have a gender-diverse minister.
