Welcome to the Museum's April newsletter! |
Dear friends of the Cristobal Gabarron Museum,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to our April newsletter, a space where we share our activities, news and events.
In our #connectedmuseum LIASONS section, we are pleased to travel to the amazing city of Warhol, connecting with the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and specifically with the Carnegie Museum of Art, through one of its curators, Raymund Ryan, and the Director of Registration and Archives, Elizabeth Tufts-Brown.
In addition, we are delighted to present the recently opened exhibition 'The Spirit of Dreams' by French artist Frédéric Ballester. This exhibition, curated by Céline Seidler-Bahougne with the participation of Lieven De Buck, invites us to immerse ourselves in a world of reflection on the human condition and our role in the modern world.
In a special way, we cannot fail to celebrate the continued presence of Siega Verde (Green Mowing) in Brussels and Wesenberg, two places that are enriched by the beauty and meaning of this series inspired by Paleolithic art. It is a testament to the enduring power of art to transcend borders and connect cultures.
Thank you for being part of our community and for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you to the museum soon.
Sincerely yours,
Cris Gabarron Cabero President of the Gabarron and Casa Pintada Foundations

The Cristobal Gabarron Museum is not restricted to the walls of its headquarters in Mula, but also like the artist that gives its name, it is characterized by its nomadic spirit. The divulgation of the work we do moves beyond its geographical boundaries, reaching different parts of our planet.

The LIASONS section of #connectedmuseum, seeks to establish connections with the art world in different cities around the world, through its real protagonists, artists, critics, curators, heads of museums, biennials, etc... that will help us discover all kinds of art and perspectives.
This April, we are pleased to put the spotlight on Warhol's amazing city, connecting you with the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and specifically the Carnegie Museum of Art.
In the city of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania), the mogul of the steel industry, Andrew Carnegie, decided to finance since 1896 a system of access to culture for the American people, which included a museum and, periodically, an exhibition where the best of Western modern art was shown: the Internationals. Spanish art was the protagonist in many of these editions, with the success of Zuloaga, Anglada Camarasa, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Solana, Chillida, Tàpies, Canogar, Feito, Saura or Rivera, among others. For more information on this important research, we recommend the book ¡Bienvenido, Mr. Carnegie! Spanish Art in the Internationals of the United States (1898-1995) by Dr. Javier Pérez Segura, professor of Art History at the Complutense University of Madrid and independent curator of exhibitions; where his research topics are the reception of 20th century Spanish art abroad, the debates between identity and modernity or between art and politics, and the rise of visual and mass culture.

When I begin I have no idea where I am going. All I can see is a certain spatial constellation from which lines of strength gradually emerge… I perceive something that I call, for want of a more appropriate word, the “emanation” of form; I gradually absorb it and as it were inhale it. -Eduardo Chillida
The work of Spanish Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida embraces a contradiction between the heft and solidity of chosen material (iron or steel) and a sense of ethereal movement. A student of architecture, Chillida was driven to investigate questions of density and rhythm in his often-monumental works, exploring the many ways that mass and volume can contain and occupy space. Here, in Aizean (In the Wind), rough-hewn bars of iron appear to splinter and flutter as if caught in a storm.
In his uses of direct welding, Chillida rejected classical traditions of sculpture-molding and casting- to engage in a more improvisational process that echoed how his peers experimented with gestural forms of abstraction in painting.

At the Carnegie Museum of Art, we connected with Elizabeth Tufts-Brown, Manager of Registration & Archives, and Raymund Ryan, curator The Heinz Architectural Center, for their insights. Check the videos below.

Raymund Ryan, Curator The Heinz Architectural Center, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA, tells us in this video about this enormous construction by Phyllida Barlow, which creates a three-dimensional experience of color, texture and form, cleverly placed in a room that has a window that communicates and dialogues with the Carnegie, 1985 by the recently deceased Richard Serra placed outside in the Carnegie Museum of Art's Fountain Plaza.

|
If an empty room may be understood as a blank canvas, Phyllida Barlow fills her canvas emphatically with layers of painted plaster and cement. Surface after surface, her outsized three-dimensional constructions, which often evoke the multi-faceted style of Cubism, come to occupy space much like a ship in a bottle. "How I'm physically negotiating the space is often more important that the object itself, " Barlow says. "They are obstacles to be navigated, protagonist that I feel I'm encountering." With its many painted surfaces pieced together, untitle: Upturnedhouse stands at the intersection of painting, sculpture and architecture. In Barlow's practice more broadly, these three artistic disciplines become a single, idiosyncratic approach as she challenges our perceptions and assumptions of each. This work was exhibited in the 2013 Carnegie International.

Five sculptures from the series Siega Verde (Green Mowing) by Cristobal Gabarron, remain on display in Brussels, specifically in the spaces of Tour & Taxis and the ‘Migratie Museum Migration’, until December 2024. This series is inspired by the Paleolithic site of Siega Verde in Salamanca, recognized by UNESCO as exceptional in Iberian Paleolithic art, these works capture the essence of a prehistoric past that has fascinated the artist since he was young. The series reflects his constant exploration of prehistoric themes throughout his career, as witnessed in other series such as 101 Stones, Prints, The silence of Stones, My epicurean garden and The birth of time.

Los Demonios de Vincent (Vincent's Demons) This month we dedicate this space to 'Vincent's Demons', a series composed of three paintings made with pigment and ink on paper. This series is a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh, the artist and his complex personality, whom Gabarron has studied and admires. Through these works, Gabarron explores the torments, enigmas and difficulties Van Gogh faced throughout his life, especially in relation to his communication with the world and his internal struggle. Vincent Van Gogh was known for his intense emotional experiences and his deep connection to artistic expression. His life was marked by responsibility, anguish and a sense of duty that often plagued him. In addition, Van Gogh made reference to disturbing dreams that exacerbated his inner concerns. In 'Vincent's Demons', Cristobal Gabarron personally interprets these dreams and the elements that might have tormented Van Gogh. Through his distinctive style and using pigment and ink on paper, Gabarron brings to life the emotions and challenges that Vincent experienced in his life. This series, which Gabarron himself calls La nave de los locos (The Ship of Fools), alludes to a ship whose crew is made up of artists who in some way have marked and inspired Gabarron. One of those artists is Vincent Van Gogh, to whom he dedicates a total of six works, where he captures the emotional intensity and inner struggle that he faces in his work.

|
We received the visit of Matías F. Hernández García, chemist and resident in Murcia who came to visit the museum with family and friends to Mula. In his tour through the museum he left us some words about the different places they visited during the day and his conclusions about the visit to this house-museum, highlighting its particularities, the permanent collection Gabarron Limitless.
We are deeply grateful for Matias' words and for his visit. His appreciation for our museum and his contribution to our community inspire us to continue promoting art and culture in all its forms. We hope your experience was as enriching as ours in welcoming you. Thank you, Matías, for being part of our community!
