Welcome to the Museum's June newsletter! |
Dear readers,
On Tuesday, June 4th, our museum celebrated a very special event coinciding with the anniversary of its inauguration on June 8, 2005, Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Asturias, now the King and Queen of Spain. This year, an artistic and culinary performance was orchestrated by chef Natividad Aznar in dialogue with four creators: Cristobal Gabarron hosting, with Concha Martínez Montalvo, Blas Miras, and Luis Izquierdo as guest artists.
June is a very special month in astronomical terms, as the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere occurs on the 20th, when the Earth is tilted maximally towards the Sun, marking the first day of summer with the shortest night of the year.
Since ancient times, special events associated with this natural phenomenon have been celebrated. Therefore, it is no coincidence that on June 15, we join the Atapuerca Foundation in the context of its 25th anniversary, in collaboration with the Caja de Burgos Foundation, to celebrate the ninth edition of 'Ambit' at the 'Atapuerca' sites in Burgos, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in an extraordinary cultural and scientific festival curated by Eudald Carbonell, Vice President of the Atapuerca Foundation and co-director of the Atapuerca Project, and by Beatriz Rodríguez Unamuno, head of the Culture and Educational Innovation Area at Caja de Burgos Foundation.
Also this month, our museum connects with the city of Washington D.C. through two figures from its artistic scene: the renowned artist Carol Brown Goldberg, heir to the 'Color Field Painting' movement of the legendary Gene Davis or Sam Gilliam— influential members of the Washington Color School known for his focus on the use of color and abstraction during the 1950s and 1960s—who welcomes us to her studio in Chevy Chase, and Jack Rasmussen, director and curator of the American University Museum Katzen Arts Center.
I hope you enjoy it. Cordially,
Cris Gabarron Cabero President, Casa Pintada Foundation

19th ANNIVERSARY/ 3rd Art and Gastronomy Encounter / Cristobal Gabarron Museum
|
For the third consecutive year, the Cristobal Gabarron Museum celebrates this special event coinciding with the anniversary of its inauguration. An event that merges two creative disciplines, art and gastronomy, into a unique experience by creating a dialogue between different artists, personalities from the world of culture, and communication from an anthropological perspective. Our goal is to socialize art, fostering intercultural dialogue by desacralizing art and making it more accessible to the general population. This artistic and culinary performance, orchestrated this year by chef Natividad Aznar, pays homage to four creators from the region: Cristobal Gabarron hosting, with Concha Martínez Montalvo, Blas Miras, and Luis Izquierdo as guest artists. Among the guests were personalities from the cultural, tourism, and institutional sectors of the Region of Murcia such as Carmen Conesa Nieto, Regional Minister of Tourism, Culture, Youth, and Sports of the Government of Murcia; Juan Jesús Moreno, Mayor of Mula; Diego Boluda, Councilor of Culture of the Mula City Council; Francisco Briones and Manuel Segura Verdú, Director and Editor, respectively, of RTVE Region of Murcia; Juan Antonio de Heras, General Director of 'RTVMUR'; Antonio Peñarrubia Caravaca, General Director of 'La 7 TV'; Alberto Aguirre de Cárcer, Director of La Verdad de Murcia; Cristina Jover Acosta, Director of Agencia Weekend; Alberto Barciela Castro, Journalist, Vice President of 'EDITORED'—Association of Media Editors of Europe and Latin America; Francisco Serrano from 'Restaurante El Ventorrillo, Federación de Peñas Huertanas’; and Juan García Sandoval, Academic and Director of the Fine Arts Museum of Murcia.
On behalf of Casa Pintada Foundation: Cris Gabarron, President; Antonio Hernández Cava, Founding Trustee; Cristóbal Moreno, Founding Trustee; Lucía Hernández, General Secretary and Visits; Aurora Rodríguez Teruel, Museum and Exhibitions Coordinator; and José Antonio Vélez, Communications Department.

AMBIT ATAPUERCA / 9th edition / Sierra de Atapuerca, Burgos |
Last Saturday, June 15, the Atapuerca Archaeological site hosted the artistic project 'Ambit: A Creative Journey Through the 5 Continents.' This activity, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Atapuerca Foundation, is mainly supported by the Caja de Burgos Foundation and led by the Gabarron Foundation. Conceived by artist Cristobal Gabarron, the project aims to promote international artistic encounters in places of historical and artistic significance. 'Ambit' has already visited several locations worldwide and, in its ninth edition, will take place in the Trench of the archaeopaleontological sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca under the curatorship of Eudald Carbonell and Beatriz Rodriguez Unamuno. Regional artists from various disciplines, including music, dance, thought, and poetry, will join Gabarron to create a unique choral work.

The Cristobal Gabarron Museum is not restricted to the walls of its headquarters in Mula; like the artist whose name it bear, it is characterized by its nomadic spirit. The dissemination of our work extends beyond geographical boundaries, reaching different parts of our planet.

LIASONS | Washington D.C. |
The LIASONS section of #connectedmuseum, seeks to establish connections with the art world in different cities around the world, through its real protagonists, artists, critics, curators, heads of museums, biennials... They enrich our understanding of various art forms and perspectives.
Our museum #connects with the city of Washington D.C. through two prominent figures in its art scene. We explore
artist Carol Brown Goldberg's studio in Chevy Chase and delve into the American University Museum Katzen Arts Center under the guidance of its
curator Jack Rasmussen.
|
|
Carol Brown Goldberg, a torchbearer of the 'Color Field Painting' movement alongside legendary figures such as Gene Davis and Sam Gilliam, influential members of the Washington Color School renowned for their focus on color and abstraction during the 1950s and 1960s, shares insights from her studio in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Her work explores themes of science, nature, and spirituality. While her style and approach vary, abstraction is a recurring theme in her artistic output, which includes painting, sculpture, and installations.

Jack Rasmussen serves as the director and curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center. With a distinguished career in arts and arts education, Rasmussen has been pivotal in advancing contemporary art in America's political capital and elevating the visibility of emerging artists. CLOSING / Wifredo Lam / Hong Kong |
The Gabarron Foundation Asia was honored to participate in the poignant farewell of the acclaimed exhibition 'Wifredo Lam Homecoming', marking the artist's inaugural display in Asia before its anticipated retrospective at MoMA in New York in 2025.
Juan Manuel Gabarron recited Spanish verses by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, alongside artists performing in Cantonese, Mandarin, French, and English. The event featured musical performances, including Stéphane Lam, the artist's son, who contributed as a musician and producer.
Wifredo Lam's career is intimately linked to the poetry of the 20th century. 'Wifredo Lam: Homecoming' focuses on this poetic dimension, without which the artist's work could not be fully experienced.
The actors read fragments of poems composed by friends of Wifredo Lam, or by poets whose words dialogue with his paintings. Poetry: 顧城 Gu Cheng - China⽣命幻想曲/Fantasy about life. Aimé Césaire - France. Cahier d'un retour au pays natal (Apolyphony of languages). René Char - France. Rien (Mash-up by Cocteau Molotov). Gabriel García Márquez - Colombia. The last voyage of the ghost ship. Five sculptures from Cristobal Gabarron's Siega Verde (Green Mowing) series are currently on display in Brussels, specifically at Tour & Taxis and the 'Migratie Museum Migration', until December 2024. Inspired by the Paleolithic site of Siega Verde in Salamanca (Spain), recognized by UNESCO for its exceptional Iberian Paleolithic art, these works capture the essence of a prehistoric past that has fascinated the artist since his youth. The series reflects Gabarron's lifelong exploration of prehistoric themes, evident in other series such as 101 Stones, Prints, The Silence of Stones, My Epicurean Garden, and The Birth of Time.

‘La sima de los Leopardos’ (The Chasm of the Leopards)
This month, marking the
19th anniversary of the Cristobal Gabarron Museum, we highlight a cornerstone of our collection as the 'work of the month', a fundamental work since the establishment of this museum: 'La sima de los leopardos', which has served as the museum's iconic image for many years.
In this large canvas of 155 cm. x 502 cm. by the Spanish artist Cristobal Gabarron, it is presented to us as the "great fable of the Cosmos". The message, akin to ancient Greek texts, is conveyed through zoomorphic silhouettes, with human representation notably absent.
As humanity inhabits Earth, we wander in pursuit of understanding our existence and the rationale behind our condition. The artists are part of that guild of thinkers who strive to offer the rest of us a particular interpretation of the "Beginning" and the "End" and, between both extremes, the conclusions of our brief and convoluted journey through the Universe.

|
Susana Spadoni visited our museum and shared her insights on the unique museum spaces dedicated primarily to a single artist, as part of the Unipersonal Museums Cycle. This was during a conference co-organized by the Ramón Gaya Museum and the Cristobal Gabarron Museum, where she eloquently delved into the work and legacy of the Aragonese sculptor Pablo Serrano.
In addition to the beautiful perspective that she gives us in the video, we had the privilege of talking about the meeting of the two artists: Pablo Serrano and Cristobal Gabarron.
Thank you very much Susana for your words and your valuable contribution.
