Zoo Miami announces birth of 2 sloth bears |
“Kematee,” a 4-year-old sloth bear, gave birth to a single cub in the secluded den area located behind her public habitat on Dec. 4, at approximately 4 a.m. Then, at approximately 9:30 a.m., she gave birth to a second cub. These are the first births for Kematee, who arrived at Zoo Miami in 2021 from the Philadelphia Zoo where she was born. The father is “Hank,” who is 11 years old and arrived at Zoo Miami in 2016 from the National Zoo in Washington, DC, where he was born. The newborns also are his first surviving cubs. PTS joins with Special Olympics Florida for inclusive track event |
Palmer Trinity School (PTS) partnered with Special Olympics Florida to host the “Unified Strides Track and Field Invitational Meet” at its campus on Saturday, Jan. 6. In a show of unity and inclusion of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, more than 60 athletes from the Special Olympics and more than 60 PTS student volunteers participated. Events included a unified 1,500-meter race, a 4×100-meter relay, and a 4×400-meter relay. Village hosts inaugural Pickleball Tournament at Coral Reef Park |
The Village of Palmetto Bay hosted its inaugural Pickleball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 6, and Sunday, Jan. 7, at Coral Reef Park. The tournament was organized by Connor Porry and Top Level Pickleball with a number of sponsors. Porry is a teenage pickleball enthusiast and advocate who has been championing the cause of reducing court fees for pickleball players in South Florida cities. One Change Bracelets: Raising funds for melanoma research |
Callie Crews is a junior high school student at Palmer Trinity School who learned about melanoma when her mother was diagnosed with the dangerous form of skin cancer in 2015. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops when melanocytes (the cells that give the skin its tan or brown color) start to grow out of control. Since then, Crews and several of her friends and family members have launched a non-profit organization called One Change Bracelets.
