According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), used motor oil is one of the most dangerous pollutants, slow to degrade, full of toxic chemicals and heavy metals, sticking to everything from sand to bird feathers. But there’s a silver lining: the Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is pleased to announce that residents can now recycle their used motor oil at the Sunset-Kendall Trash and Recycling Center (TRC).

Town of Cutler Bay Mayor Tim Meerbott hosted the annual State of the Town Address in the town’s council chambers on Oct. 22. The theme was “Resilient Roots, Thriving Future.

The event was opened by town manager Rafael Casals who began with the Honor Guard’s presentation of colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the singing of the National Anthem.

Palmer Trinity School (PTS) recently welcomed Jim DeFede, an investigative reporter for CBS News Miami and host of the public affairs program “Facing South Florida,” as a guest speaker for its Mosaic program, an inclusivity curriculum integrated into its advisory program for grades six through 12.

DeFede addressed students’ questions on the integrity of the media, the principles of fair and balanced reporting and identifying trustworthy news sources. He encouraged students to familiarize themselves with a variety of media perspectives and highlighted that although there are limitations present within news organizations, the hallmark of a good journalist is to be objective and not allow personal biases to sway public perception.

Two seats on the Village of Palmetto Bay Council were on the ballot, Vice Mayor and Council Member Seat 2, in the Nov. 5 general election. Incumbent Vice Mayor Leanne Tellam faced challenger Mark Merwitzer and incumbent Steve Cody faced a previous council member, David Singer.

With 100 percent of the eight precincts reporting, political newcomer Mark Merwitzer, a 24-year-old resident raised in Palmetto Bay, a graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in political science and a minor in urban planning, received 6,682 votes to Tellam’s 6,605 votes, a difference of 77 votes.

Merwitzer also is the associate director at Transit Alliance Miami and previously served on the Palmetto Bay Education Advisory Committee and chaired the Youth Community Involvement Board.

Incumbent Seat 2 Councilmember Suzy Lord defeared challenger Brook De Melo Gomes in the Nov. 5 municipal election in the Town of Cutler Bay. With 100 percent of the 11 precincts reporting, Suzy Lord received 10,077 votes (52 percent) and Brook De Melo Gomes received 9,201 votes (48 percent), with Lord winning by 876 votes.
