TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE
On 20 November each year since 1999, Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is commemorated worldwide to pay tribute to transgender individuals whose lives we have lost to violence, discrimination and prejudice. This important day in history was created after the murder of Rita Hester—a Black trans woman from Massachusetts—sparked an international movement that continues today with candlelight vigils and other services offered globally as acts of remembrance. TDOR particularly highlights how Latina and Black transgender women are disproportionately at risk of hate crimes across the world. Brought into focus by U.S President Biden’s official statement for national recognition in 2021; TDOR stands proudly as a reminder that compassion must become actionable to bring about positive change.
