Critically endangered sea turtle returned to the wild

The Zoo Miami Sea Turtle Hospital received its first out of state patients when eight cold-stunned juvenile Kemp’s ridley sea turtles were flown in from the Cape Cod area. The turtles had been exposed to rapidly dropping temperatures in the Northeast’s Atlantic Ocean and were suffering from a variety of issues ranging from emaciation, abrasions, dehydration and swollen eyes. Following several weeks of dedicated care, six of the eight individuals had made an excellent recovery reflected in significant weight gain and increased mobility as well as the healing of their abrasions. Saving Florida’s only population of rare, endangered orchid from extinction
|
Researchers have pinpointed the biggest threats to the only population of rare, endangered mule ear orchids in the U.S.FIU’s orchid research team found powerful hurricanes can wipe out these fragile plants, but an invasive species of scale insect that feeds on the leaves is the primary culprit of concern. “Mule ear orchids we observed that had scale insects were more likely to die,” said Haydee Borrero, the study’s lead author and FIU postdoctoral scientist. “This is an invasive species that has impacted other types of orchids on Florida’s west coast. So, it’s something we need to be worried about.”... Read More
