Welcome to our newsletter! |
Dear readers,
After a wonderful summer, we are pleased to share with you the many exciting activities that have taken place over the past quarter.
We celebrated, with great enthusiasm and participation, the ninth edition of Ambit in Atapuerca, "Origin and Consciousness: Serendipity of Origin" (watch the documentary trailer here), an artistic and cultural event that has highlighted our commitment to comprehensive heritage, our region, and the excellent collaboration between institutions with similar goals, such as the Atapuerca Foundation, celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and the Caja de Burgos Foundation.
Simultaneously, we have embarked on a new chapter at our beloved Wesenberg Sculpture Park (Germany) in partnership with the Peter Wilmot Thompson Stiftung. In July, we welcomed our first artists-in-residence: Elena Bajo, Vicente Vázquez, and Víctor Ortuño. In September, we are hosting Luisa Aristazabal, Mayte Santamaría, and Livia Daniel until the end of October. Their artistic proposals resonate within the natural surroundings of this unique space. These residencies are notable for creating a space for artistic research and creation deeply connected to the natural environment, just 100 km north of Berlin.
We are also proud, thanks to the initiative of the Gabarron Foundation, to have launched the first maritime route of the Maltese Way of Saint James. Operated by XirCammini, with the support of the Malta Tourism Authority and Heritage Malta, this new cultural and tourist route highlights the important historical and artistic legacy of the peoples and cultures of the Mediterranean, as well as the spirituality of humanity through the introspective reunion of its participants. We express our gratitude to Ambassadors Daniel Azzopardi (Malta) and José María Muriel (Spain) for their commitment and support. During the three weeks of this new maritime route of the Maltese Way, we must highlight the artistic residency of Miguel Ángel Ruiz, whose works will be on display in our museum next year.
In our 'Liasons' section, we have delved into the magical artistic world of the city of Sharjah, capital of one of the 7 United Arab Emirates, connecting with the annual art 'Summit' MM2024: Tawashujat. We thank the Sharjah Art Foundation, its president and director Hoor Al Qasimi, and vice president Nawar Al Qassimi for their vision, dynamism, hospitality, and example. Don't miss the testimony of the co-curator of the Sharjah Biennial 16, which will be held in 2025, Amal Khalaf, as well as the artist Jumana Emil Abboud.
With the arrival of September, we inaugurate the new season marked by the exhibition: 'Les Dessins de Degas', which brings together 29 works from the Gabarron Foundation collection, allowing us to go into the creative process of the French artist Edgar Degas, through a selection of drawings compiled by the engraver and artist Henri Rivière. We invite you to Mula (Murcia) to discover it.
We thank you for your continued support and interest.
Sincerely,
Cris Gabarron Cabero President of the Casa Pintada Foundation

MARITIME ROUTE / 1st Edition / Maltese Way & “Artist of the Sea”. |
On July 25, 2023, Malta and Spain unveiled in Birgu, (Malta), the official landmark of the Camino de Santiago. One year later, in July 2024, the Gabarron Foundation promotes the first edition of the Maltese Way Cruise Regatta. This event marks the introduction of a new maritime pilgrimage route from Malta to Spain, combining cultural heritage with spiritual reflection. With the support of XirCammini, a Maltese volunteer organization, the 3,493 km journey to Santiago de Compostela began on July 16 and concluded its first leg of 2024 on the 28th. In this framework, the foundation initiates its First Maritime Art Residency, with artist Miguel Angel Ruiz, who has documented the journey through his writings, sketches, and drawings.
|
The maritime route is recorded in a ship's logbook and in video summaries of the events of each day. As an example, the video included here, corresponding to the second day of this historic maritime pilgrimage that began after the blessing of the pilgrims in the beautiful church of St. Lawrence in Birgu, after completing the night walk of 34 km from the Catacombs of St. Paul in Rabat. The church of St. Lawrence, dedicated to the patron saint born in Huesca (Spain), is a cornerstone of Malta's religious and cultural history. Built in the 16th century, this architectural marvel has been a place of worship and witness to centuries of history.
The emotional ceremony was organized by XirCammini CEO, James Portelli, the feeling of unity and devotion was palpable. The Spanish Ambassador to Malta along with representatives of Visit Malta honored the departure with a simple but meaningful farewell visit, highlighting the historic departure of this first cruise regatta.

Through our LIASONS section in #ConnectedMuseum, we're building bridges to the global art scene. By connecting with the people who shape it—artists, critics, curators, and more—we aim to uncover a diverse range of artistic perspectives from around the world. This time, we're reflecting on our recent connection to Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The Sharjah Art Foundation has been a driving force behind the city's artistic renaissance, and its Sharjah Biennial is a renowned international event. We were excited to participate in the 'MM2024: Taiwashujat' and share insights from Amal Khalaf, a co-curator of the next Biennial, and the artist Jumana Emil Abboud.
|
|
Amal Khalaf is a prominent curator and artist with extensive experience at the intersection of art and social justice. She is currently the Director of Programs at Cubitt and Civic Curator at the Serpentine Galleries in London. Throughout her career, she has developed exhibitions and collaborative projects such as Support Structures for Support Structures and Radio Ballads. She has participated in major international events, including the Venice Biennale and Art Dubai, and is co-curating the upcoming Sharjah Biennial 16 in 2025. Her work aims to challenge neoliberal attitudes in the arts and empower grassroots communities.
|
|
|
Jumana Emil Abboud is an artist known for her multidisciplinary work, which spans drawing, video, performance, and storytelling. Her art delves into themes such as memory, folklore, and displacement, deeply influenced by the Palestinian experience and its cultural narratives. Abboud often draws on local myths and legends, using them as metaphors to explore issues of identity, belonging, and loss. She has participated in major international exhibitions and events, including the Venice Biennale, and notably in the Sharjah Biennial, where her focus on exploring cultural and community narratives has been a central element of her work.

ACTIVITIES / Hamburger Bahnhof Museum / Visits |
Our Artist-in-Residence program at Skulpturenpark Wesenberg offers a unique immersive experience, blending the serenity of Germany's forests and lakes with a busy schedule of activities. Resident artists have had the opportunity to participate in top-tier cultural events in Berlin, such as the opening of the new permanent collection and Mark Bradford’s first exhibition in Germany, *Keep Walking*, at the renowned Hamburger Bahnhof museum. Additionally, they had the chance to personally meet key figures from the art world, including the museum’s co-directors, Till Fellrath and Sam Bardaouil, as well as Mark Bradford himself. These experiences were further enriched by encounters with other notable figures, such as Dr. Hermann Parzinger, President of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and CEO of Europa Nostra, along with artists and art critics like Fré Ilgen. Beyond Berlin, the artists have built connections with other residency programs in the region, such as the one in Neustrelitz, led by Ines Diederich. These exchanges have enhanced their experience and allowed them to meet artists from diverse nationalities, thanks to our coordinator, Philine Bracht. At the heart of Wesenberg, the Gabarron Museum Sculpture Park provides a peaceful, natural setting for artistic creation. However, the program's intensity extends beyond the studio: resident artists have also participated in interviews with German media, further expanding their visibility and the reach of their work. .

'Siega Verde' Installation. Tour & Taxis, Brussels (Belgium). Photography: Rose Rongac
|
Five sculptures from Cristobal Gabarron's Siega Verde (Green Mowing) series are currently on display in Brussels, specifically at Tour & Taxis and the 'Migratie Museum Migration', until December 2024. Inspired by the Paleolithic site of Siega Verde in Salamanca (Spain), recognized by UNESCO for its exceptional Iberian Paleolithic art, these works capture the essence of a prehistoric past that has fascinated the artist since his youth. The series reflects Gabarron's lifelong exploration of prehistoric themes, evident in other series such as 101 Stones, Prints, The Silence of Stones, My Epicurean Garden, and The Birth of Time.

The Millennium Chapel', 1999. Integral intervention (murals, walls, ceilings). Cristobal Gabarron.
|
The Millennium Chapel
We introduce to you the 'Millennium Chapel'. Cristobal Gabarron transformed this chapel in Medina del Campo, Valladolid, into an art museum that reflects the values promoted by the UN at the Millennium Summit in 2000. The chapel, located in the Palacio de Las Salinas, features allegorical artwork on its walls and ceilings, representing universal values such as peace, solidarity, freedom and tolerance. Gabarron used different techniques such as mural painting, sculpture, mosaic and stained glass to create this work, whose interior composition is made up of 490 panels, distributed in different murals of 18 meters in length. These mural panels have a very precise meaning: on the right side the evils of humanity, on the left side the future, with eight themes that represent it: peace, tolerance, freedom, equality, solidarity, nature, technology and education. This work was unveiled in 2001 as part of a larger project called 'Gabarron Millennium'.
