HERE'S YOUR UPDATE

SASES - JUDICIAL REVIEW APPEAL

d6591ad6-4f4c-11e9-a3c9-06b79b628af2%2F1694524952138-SASES-judicial-review-appeal-2023.jpg
SASES has been granted leave to appeal Scottish Powers' DCO on Flooding & Cumulative Impact.

The hearing will take place at the Royal Courts of Justice on the 5th & 6th December. This is likely to be SASES final opportunity to directly challenge SPRs DCOs and EA1N & EA2s dangerous onshore proposals.

Whilst preparing for the appeal SASES continues to support Friston Parish Council on the incessant burden of NSIPs (Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects). We also support SEAS campaign which plans to appeal their own judicial review decision.

SEAS - SEEK LEAVE TO APPEAL

SEAS are seeking leave to appeal Justice Holgate's decision to dismiss their own judicial review of SPR's EA1N & EA2 (July 2023).

SEAS believe the non-objection & confidentiality clauses in Heads of Terms that Scottish Power imposed on landowners, sought to influence individuals. Preventing them from making fair representations during the Planning Inspectorate examination, thus resulting in a stifled and unfair examination of EA1N & EA2.

SEALINK UPDATE
National Grid ET (Proposed link between Suffolk and Kent)
In August onshore surveying was carried out near Aldeburgh to determine technical feasibility of drilling a tunnel (HDD or micro tunnelling) for cabling to pass under RSPB North Warren.

Statutory consultations for Sealink are due to be announced soon, this will be the first time the actual project details will be released with details of preferred onshore development locations. It's important that local people continue to engage especially at statutory stages leading up to DCO submission and examination (you can register for project updates via the link below).

NAUTILUS UPDATE
Nautilus the proposed National Grid UK - Belgium interconnector has been investigating the feasibility of an alternative landfall at The Isle of Grain in Medway, Kent instead of East Suffolk.

East Suffolk options presented during non-Statutory Consultations in 2021 are paused while the Kent connection is fully explored, however a connection at Friston in Suffolk is reserved as a possible option should the Isle of Grain be ruled out.

Decision on a UK connection point is expected by the end of 2023.

COMMUNITY BENEFIT

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero is continuing to explore a requirement for energy projects to bring community benefit. DESNZ has been meeting with a number of local representatives.

Up until now it's been impossible to see how Scottish Power & National Grid are contributing to benefit local communities. SASES continues to argue that Scottish Power & National Grid's proposals at Friston are dangerous and this is a more important issue that has to be addressed. But specifically on community benefit:

How do SPR & National Grid propose to benefit local people living next door to substations and convertor stations?

1. In terms of physical benefit, significant sums would be needed to offset the damage poorly devised projects will have on landscapes & coastal habitats.

2. Financial benefit must be generous and aimed directly at the local communities most affected by onshore development if residents are to feel less negative about energy projects.

How can the UK have an effective energy strategy if the energy minister changes every few months?

LIB DEM LEADER SAYS HE PROPOSED AN OFFSHORE RING MAIN WHEN HE WAS MINISTER FOR ENERGY
Sir Ed Davey told BBC LOOK EAST that he proposed for offshore wind farms to connect via an off-shore grid. However, at the time National Grid felt it was too costly, so the idea was not developed.

National Grid's short-term outlook and penny pinching to save a few £'s has resulted in a failure to develop ideas for an offshore grid. National Grid are instrumental in the mess we now face with numerous proposals for wind farm substations and converter stations across the Suffolk countryside.
