BEYOND4.0 Summer School was held

"Work and Welfare in the Digital Age: what we know and what we need to know" has brought together experienced and young researchers sharing a common interest: to examine the impact of digital transformation and identifying policy options supporting transformation.

During the three-days meeting more than 40 people, with 16 nationalities, have shared and learnt from each other. For that purpose the Summer School has been organized in an interactive manner providing researchers the opportunity to combine theoretical and practical knowledge. The hybrid design of the learning activity has been based on different forms wrangling from Scientific Sessions, Workshops, Round-tables, PhD Poster Sessions, Public Policy Sessions and site visits to companies.

Digital Transformation: Regional Perspectives and Prospects

Europe’s regions and regional ecosystems are of key focal interest and importance, economically, socially and politically. BEYOND4.0 therefore pays specific attention to the impact of digitization and Industry4.0 on the regions, both retrospectively and prospectively. Our June 2019 BEYOND4.0 Summer School in San Sebastian meant the effective start of BEYOND4.0 ’s regional work package, with in-depth regional and ecosystem analyses, but also a number of workshops in the regions (April-June 2020) ahead of us.

In the oncoming years, various regions and ecosystems will be investigated, highlighting best practices, providing new policy insights and useful do’s and don’ts, with regard to 1. Work and human capital, 2. Social inclusion, and 3. (re)Distribution issues.

BEYOND4.0 will also be present in one of the central sessions during the oncoming European Week of Cities and Regions dubbed “Shaping our Future in Smarter Regions and Cities: Digitalisation, Jobs & Growth” (7-10 October 2019).

Work Package 3:
The work commenced

The main objective of WP3 – “Creating data bases” led by Cnam-CEET is to build EU-cross country, panel and multilevel databases to measure the socio-economic impacts of technological transformations, in several fields, like work organisation, occupations and skills, and quality of working life and health at work.
The aim is to re-use existing databases, focusing on questions relevant to the topics of BEYOND4.0. The Cnam-CEET team has begun to explore available databases containing relevant indicators.
We requested the following databases from Eurostat:

1. Data on employee’s level:

> EU-LFS, EU-SILC (Eurostat): ad hoc modules of the EU-LFS (Eurostat) providing valuable information on accidents and work-related health problems, work organisation and working-time arrangements, and the reconciliation of work and family life.

2. Data on employer’s level:

> CIS (Eurostat): gives information about process, organisational, marketing, and product innovation.
> CVTS (Eurostat): covers topics related to skills and competence improvement.

Other data accesses have also been requested, such as all editions of the ECS (European Company Surveys) and EWCS (European Working Conditions Surveys). In the coming months the team also plans to ask access to the EU-OSHA Esener survey (describing how establishments manage safety and health risks) to and to the OECD survey on adult skills (PIAAC). The team also explores the usability of a survey from Cedefop, addressing skill needs and developments of employees.

People And Machines: A New Employer Survey

In April, the Warwick Institute for Employment Research published a report on the use of AI and automation. Undertaken for the UK’s representative body for human resource professionals, the Chartered Institute for Personnel & Development (CIPD), the report is based on an employer survey of 750+ organisations across the private, public and voluntary sectors that have invested in technology made in the past five years. It explores who was involved in decisions about the introduction and implementation of the technology, the impact of the technology on the business of the organisation and its employees, and any further plans for investments in new technology in the next two years. Findings focus on two types of AI and automation: that for physical tasks and that for cognitive tasks.

Coming in July: Working Paper On Beyond4.0’s Conceptual Framework

In July, BEYOND4.0 will publish a guidance paper on the key concepts, issues and developments driving the project. It will provide a common intellectual understanding of what is to be analysed and reported in the project. Producing the guide is led by the Warwick Institute for Employment Research.

Unmasking the Potential: TECHNEQUALITY-Workshop in Amsterdam

BEYOND4.0 was invited to participate in a workshop of the TECHNEQUALITY-project. TECHNEQUALITY is one of the two other projects that receives funding from H2020 in the same Call as BEYOND4.0. The PLUS-project is the third project.
TECHNEQUALITY looks at the same topics of digital transformation as BEYOND4.0, but has a different focus. The issues of equality and how it is/will be impacted by the digital transformation stands central in this project. Also, the research team is more focused on the use of econometric tools to understand the changes.
