PE/VC 2019 Investment Overview

2019 was a prosperous year for Private Equity and Venture Capital investments in India. With $48 Bn worth of investments across 1,073 deals, a YoY growth was depicted since 2017. Despite the global slowdown and other macro factors, India remained a hotbed for investors as can be seen from India’s jump in ease of business ranking from 100 in 2017 to 63 in 2019. Maximum deals in terms of value happened through buyouts and growth capital, depicting maturity in the Indian market.

Major standout trend in 2019 was the interest in the infrastructure sector, which accounted for one third of the PE/VC investments. The biggest private equity deal was Brookfield- Jio Towers deals entailing an investment of $3.7 Bn. Further, major traction was seen in financial services, real estate, and ecommerce sector. With 13 unicorn startups in 2019, India on an average added 1 unicorn every month.

With sovereign and pension funds like GIC, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) allocating billions of dollars towards India investments, funds are certainly expected to rise in 2020 once the Covid-19 situation eases.

Infrastructure Development – The Cornerstone of Economic Growth

One-third of investment amounting to $14.5 Bn in 2019 was received in the infrastructure sector, which compensated for the decline in traditional PE/VC investments. Further, the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF), set up solely for the purpose of investments in the country’s infrastructure, has received capital commitments from some of the largest institutional investors.

The National Infrastructure pipeline of $1.4tn that is to be achieved by 2025, would provide various opportunities for investors.
