Policies and public acceptance of LGBTQ+ people varies widely from country to country and even within some countries. Laws and attitudes can impact the safety of LGBTQ+ people but they also can affect the perception of safety in destinations around the world. The reality is that LGBTQ+ people face unique travel issues in every destination but with a little planning and awareness of where you’re visiting, you’re able to enjoy the travel experiences just as much as anyone else. In fact, learning about the unique challenges and experiences of LGBTQ+ people within the destinations you’re visiting brings you closer together as a community and helps to build empathy for LGBTQ+ siblings around the world.

In fact, a cruise like this has never been done before in South Africa on this scale. IGLTA has published a series of travel guides expanding the online resources we offer LGBTQ+ travelers. The travel guides reflect IGLTA’s diverse global membership and include destinations with progressive LGBTQ+ legislation and protections such as Iceland and the Netherlands as well as destinations where LGBTQ+ acceptance is not as widespread. More than 70 countries have anti-LGBTQ+ laws so it’s particularly important for LGBTQ+ travelers to be properly informed and do additional research when planning a trip.
Phoenix, Arizona is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. With a population topping 4.5 million people, the desert oasis provides a sprawling landscape complete with fabulous dining, retail, cultural attractions, and natural wonders that will surely please almost anyone. My last visit to Phoenix was highlighted by Phoenix Pride, which is tentatively scheduled for 10-11 April, 2021. This year is the 40th anniversary of the organization and one can only hope that ample amounts of vaccines are available to ensure the parade and festival go forward as planned.
