Lots of fun was had with excellent presentations from experts Dr Leroy Gonsalves and Joanna Haddock on the importance of microbat populations in Western Sydney and how we can help protect them. Three microbats were detected during the walk: Scoteanax rueppellii (Greater Broad-nosed Bat - a Threatened Species), Mormopterus ridei (Eastern Freetail Bat) and Vespadelus vulturnus (Little Forest Bat). This area of Western Sydney is a "biodiversity hotspot" with at least 11 species of microbats detected at the CLC's "Wallaroo" property. Some key points about how we can support microbats include: - Provide habitat and enhance existing habitat on your property
- Retain hollow trees, paddock trees and dead trees
- Limit disturbance to roosting sites (eg. culverts)
- Reduce pesticide use where possible
- Keep waterways/dams clear of obstructions
- Consider lighting impacts - turn your external lights off when not needed, and protect dark urban bushland
- Educate others about bats, they are treasures not pests!
